Summary Of A Good Man Is Hard To Find By Flannery OConnor

In the short story â€Å"A Good Man Is Hard To Find† by Flannery O’Connor, a family takes decides to take a vacation to Florida. The family consists of the grandmother, her son Bailey, three young children which includes a newborn, and the kids mother. On this journey they discover hidden truths about themselves. â€Å"What is a good man?† is an occurring question in the story. The characters take morals seriously, which blinds to them to oblivion of their actual truths. The â€Å"morals† the family holds themselves to are very hypocritical. We find the real truths as the family is heading towards their demise. The story starts with the grandmother, whom possesses strict values. They become aggressive, with John Wesley literally kicking Bailey in his kidney from the backseat. Bailey then gives in and pleads them to shut up. As they go along, the grandmother gets an upsetting thought. She was so upset that she scared her cat, who then jumped onto Bailey. An accident occurs. â€Å"The children were thrown to the floor and their mother, clutching the baby, was thrown out the door onto the ground; the old lady was thrown into the front seat.† The grandmother was not a bit injured, but she desperately hoped she was so that Bailey would not scold her. The place the grandmother so desperately wanted to visit was not in Georgia but in Tennessee. She states she injured an organ, but no one gave her attention. They later see a car passing by slowly. The grandmother waves to get their attention. The car once again drives by even slower, watching them. Another ironic thing is that these three men were driving a hearse. A hearse is a symbol for death. One of the three men were the misfit, the other were younger accomplices. The grandmother somewhat feels she knows this man, but does not catch on immediately. She then realizes who they were with. She says, You re the Misfit! she said. I recognized you at once!. This makes Bailey so upset. Bailey says something that makes the grandmother come to tears.
